Monday Musings

I love when I hear a message at church on Sunday and can't wait to share it with you in Monday Musings. Yesterday our pastor talked about the story of Moses. Now we've all heard this story whether churched or not. However, there were two key components to the story that stood out to me.

First, he brought up the verses about the burning bush. Exodus 3:4 says, "When the Lord saw that he(Moses) had gone over to look, God called him from within the bush, 'Moses, Moses!'" This is typically very familiar to most. But, there is something to new to be seen. God waited for Moses to pay attention to Him. This brought forth the question: How often has God tried to get my attention and I did not respond?

The other aspect of the story of Moses that was very interesting was when God asked Moses to lay down his staff. Moses' staff was his lively hood; his everything. It was what he used to corral the sheep and cattle which was what he made his living off of. Once Moses laid that staff down God blessed it. When Moses picked it up he was now holding the "staff of God." What am I/you holding onto that we need to lay down or surrender in order to see God's blessings and miraculous works in our lives. God did wondrous and amazing things with that staff through Moses including parting the Red Sea. What wonders have we missed because we hold onto things too tightly whether it be finances, family problems, insecurities, etc. The Lord wants to bless us but we have to lay it down.

So, think about this today: How is God trying to get your attention and what do you need to lay down?

Notoriety

Teenage Mother A donkey owner Simon of Cyrene Who are these people? I am sure you can figure out the first one: Mary the mother of Jesus. Who are the others and what do all three of these people have in common? They all did extraordinary things but, for the most part, went unseen. Do you ever feel unseen? Undervalued? I do. I try not to get caught up in that space, but I find myself there too often. While Mary is infamous today, she wasn't when she brought the King into this world. She was a teenager who gave birth in a barn. She was an outcast who was pregnant but not married. She told of an unbelievable story involving an angel, a Spirit, and a Savior who was going to save the world. Could you even imagine? It's easy for us to be in awe of Mary. We know the whole story. She didn't. And neither did the people around her. She had to live it. To top it all off, she had to watch her beloved son die a gruesome death. Talk about feeling unseen and undervalued. She faithfu...

Our Miracle

"He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted." Job 9:10 "You are the God who performs miracles; You will display Your power among the peoples." Psalm 77:14 Meet our miracle...and our secret. Yes, it is true. I am pregnant; about twelve weeks and a few days to be exact. We wanted to make sure this baby was healthy before announcing how great God has been to us! We have known about this precious little blessing for a little over two months and have eagerly awaited numerous sonogram and test results. We have witnessed God's mighty, yet gentle, hand every Tuesday for the past five weeks. This baby is a fighter. However, the road is not "clear" quite yet. We met with the pareanatoligist today to do a sonogram and blood test to determine if there are any chromosomal abnormalities; specifically Downs, and Trisomy 13 and 18. Although the sonogram looked great and the doctor said we were in the "safe zone," we are stil...

Don't Lose You

When Jackson was a baby, I would hop into my car on my lunch break and rush to his day care to see him. I had thirty minutes with my baby and I needed every last second. I was a mess of a new mom and had a really hard time leaving him everyday. I was caught in the conundrum of loving teaching with all that I was and loving being a mom desperately wanting to stay home. I established a neat relationship with Jack's care-takers. They were a little older than me and much wiser. They will never fully know how appreciative I am for their advice and comfort during those beginning moments as a mama. When I decided to leave my teaching career and move halfway across the country to do so, they gave me a piece of advice that I didn't take seriously initially but now hold dear. They told me I had to find something for me. They watched me finish my master's that year and knew I was the type that needed to be doing. They recognized that I was about to enter a season where I had to hold...
