Day two of our ice storm and it happened. The boys began to tire of one another. We had created a fort and in my best effort to create peace, I made sure there were three separate spaces for each boy. What I have learned as a parent, however, is that no matter how hard one tries to create fairness with the children, someone always gets upset. That's when the fighting broke out. Jack was picking on his brothers poking at them just enough to annoy each one. When I went to talk to Jack about his behavior I called him a meanie-pants. Yes, this 36-year old mama called her son a name. He was being mean and it was the first thing that came to mind. He looked at me funny and then went on about his business...a little nicer this time around. I eventually apologized to my 8-year old for the name-calling and he forgave me as kids so resiliently do. My words got to me though. I began to think about this blog and how often times, I am a meanie pants.I am constantly talking about how we get it wrong. I want to turn the tables and talk about the goodness in us. The goodness of us in Him.
We are valuable.
"Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows."
Matthew 10:31
We are loved.
"But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, ..."
Ephesians 2:4-9
We have purpose
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope."
Jeremiah 29:11
We matter.
"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them."
Psalm 139:13-16
We are forgiven.
"But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
Romans 5:8
We are made new.
"And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— ..."
Ephesians 2:1-22
